How to Clean Halo Collar Contact Tips
Why This Matters
If your Halo Collar’s static feedback does not seem to be working properly, buildup around the contact tips or charging contacts may be preventing a proper connection. Dirt, oils, skin debris, and residue can collect over time and interfere with performance.
In many cases, a careful cleaning resolves the issue without needing a replacement collar.
Before You Begin
Please only perform this cleaning if you are actively experiencing a contact-related issue. Routine deep cleaning of the contact areas is not recommended, as excessive cleaning can cause unnecessary wear over time.
For regular maintenance, we recommend simply wiping the contact areas with a dry cloth every few weeks.
Recommended Cleaning Materials
You can typically find these items at most pharmacies or retail stores.
Recommended:
- 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol
- Avoid 70% alcohol, as it contains more water and may leave residue behind
- Cotton swabs (Q-tips)
- Wooden toothpicks
- Soft-bristle toothbrush (clean and dry)
- Lint-free or microfiber cloth
- Optional: canned compressed air
Materials to Avoid
To protect your Halo Collar from damage, do not use:
- Acetone or nail polish remover
- Bleach, vinegar, ammonia-based cleaners, or harsh chemicals
- WD-40, oils, silicone sprays, or grease
- Sandpaper, steel wool, metal tools, or abrasive pads
- Pencil erasers
- Running water, soaking, or ultrasonic cleaners
These materials can damage the collar housing, strip protective coatings, or push liquid into internal components.
Cleaning the Charging Contacts
- Power the collar off completely and disconnect it from the charger.
- Use a dry microfiber or lint-free cloth to wipe away loose debris around the charging contacts.
- Lightly dampen a cotton swab with 91%+ isopropyl alcohol.
- The swab should be damp, not dripping wet.
- Gently clean the contact surface using small circular motions.
- Repeat with a fresh swab if needed until the swab comes away clean.
- Allow the collar to air dry for at least 60 seconds before reconnecting it to the charger.
Important: Avoid pressing down on the contact while cleaning, as liquid could enter the internal spring mechanism.
Cleaning the Contact Tip Threads
- Hold the collar so the threaded openings point downward.
- Gently tap the collar against your palm or use a short burst of compressed air to remove loose debris.
- Use a wooden toothpick to carefully remove buildup from the threads.
- Do not use metal tools.
- Avoid digging straight into the opening.
- Lightly dampen a cotton swab with 91%+ isopropyl alcohol.
- Twist the swab through the threads in the same direction used to unscrew the contact tips.
- If needed, use a soft-bristle toothbrush lightly dampened with alcohol to loosen stubborn buildup.
- Wipe the area clean with a dry cloth.
- Allow the collar to fully air dry for at least 2 minutes before reinstalling the contact tips.
Additional Tips
- Make sure the contact tips are securely tightened after cleaning.
- Ensure your dog’s fur is not preventing proper contact with the skin.
