Why Should I Use Wi-Fi Channel 1, 6, or 11?
Wi-Fi routers broadcast signals on either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequencies:
- 2.4 GHz: Longer range, slower speeds
- 5 GHz: Faster speeds, shorter range
The Halo Collar connects to 2.4 GHz networks only.
Within the 2.4 GHz band, Wi-Fi operates on multiple channels. Channels 1, 6, and 11 are recommended because they do not overlap with each other, helping reduce interference and improve performance.
Using other channels may lead to slower speeds or connection issues.
When to Check Your Wi-Fi Channel
You may want to adjust your router’s channel if:
- Your collar has trouble connecting to Wi-Fi
- You experience slow or inconsistent Wi-Fi performance
- Your network is set to a channel other than 1, 6, or 11
How to Change Your Wi-Fi Channel
Follow these steps to update your router settings:
Step 1: Access Your Router Settings
- Open a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Safari)
- Enter your router’s IP address in the address bar (example:
http://123.456.1.1) - Press Enter
- You may see a browser warning—select Proceed if prompted
Step 2: Log In to Your Router
- Enter your router’s username and password
- This information is usually found on a sticker on the router
- Common defaults are:
- Username: admin
- Password: admin
If you cannot locate your login details, check your router’s documentation or contact the manufacturer.
Step 3: Open Wireless Settings
- Navigate to Wireless Settings (often under Advanced Settings)
- Menu names may vary depending on your router model
- If needed, refer to your router manual or manufacturer support
If your router has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands:
- Make sure you are adjusting the 2.4 GHz network
Step 4: Disable Auto Channel (If Applicable)
- If there is an Auto-Connect or Auto Channel setting, turn it OFF
- This allows you to manually select a channel
Step 5: Change the Channel
- Select the Channel option
- Set the channel to 1, 6, or 11
- If your router is already using one of these, try switching to another (for example, from 1 to 6)
- Click Save or Apply
Your router may reboot—allow it to restart fully before reconnecting devices.
What If You Can’t Change the Channel?
Some routers do not allow manual channel selection.
If you’re unable to update your settings:
- Contact your router manufacturer for assistance
- Ask them to help set your Wi-Fi channel to 1, 6, or 11
- If already set to one of these, ask them to switch to a different recommended channel
Quick Tip
Adjusting your Wi-Fi channel can help reduce interference from nearby networks and improve your Halo Collar’s connection and performance.
