How to Optimize Your Halo Collar’s GPS Signal Levels
Watch the video below for a quick walkthrough on how to check and adjust your collar’s GPS signal settings. Then follow the steps in this guide for more detailed instructions.
Your Halo Collar uses GPS to understand where your dog is and how to respond.
As a general rule: the clearer the collar can “see” the sky, the more accurate your dog’s location will be. GPS signal strength naturally changes based on your environment—remaining strong outdoors and lowering indoors where the signal is less reliable.
Most collars work perfectly using the default GPS settings. However, environmental factors like being indoors, tree cover, or nearby structures can affect signal strength. A quick adjustment can help your collar perform at its best.
When to Check Your GPS Settings
You may want to adjust your GPS signal levels if:
- Your collar shows Low GPS outdoors, especially near your fence
- Your collar shows High GPS indoors, when it should be lower
- Your dog’s location on the map appears less accurate than expected
If none of these apply, your collar is already set up correctly.
Step 1: Open GPS Settings
- Open the Halo app and tap Settings
- Tap My Collars, then select [Dog Name]’s Collar
- Scroll to Advanced Settings
- Tap GPS Signal Level Settings
Step 2: Check the Signal Outdoors
- Place the Halo Collar on your dog as they normally wear it
- Using a leash with your dog’s regular collar or harness, go outside with your phone
- In the app, observe the signal bar as it updates in real time
- The blue zone (High GPS) is ideal for outdoor accuracy and preventions
- If the signal drops into lower zones outdoors, slightly adjust the top slider, then test again
- Walk around your yard—especially near your fence line—until the signal stays consistently in the blue zone
Step 3: Check the Signal Indoors
- Return inside your home
- The signal should move into the Low GPS zone
- This ensures feedback is paused where GPS is less reliable
If the signal remains high indoors, slightly raise the lower slider until it consistently reads Low GPS inside.
Step 4: Save Your Settings
- Tap Done to save your changes
- To reset at any time, tap Revert to Halo Defaults
Run a Diagnostic Check
If the GPS still doesn’t seem quite right:
- Go to Settings
- Tap My Collars
- Select [Dog Name]’s Collar
- Tap Diagnostics
The app will identify any issues and guide you through next steps.
A Quick Note on GPS Updates
Your Halo Collar calculates your dog’s location directly. Your phone simply displays that information, and update speed may vary depending on connection type:
- Bluetooth: Fastest updates when you’re nearby
- Wi-Fi: Updates location and firmware while charging
- LTE: Sends updates when your dog is away from home
