Battery & Charging Guide for Your Halo Collar
Proper charging habits help extend your collar’s battery life and ensure it’s always ready to keep your dog safe. This guide outlines best practices, troubleshooting steps, and how to interpret charging indicators.
Best Practices
- Charge nightly to keep the collar ready for daily use
- Avoid letting the battery fully deplete. Keeping the collar charged helps maintain performance and prevents potential power issues
- Always use the provided Halo charging cable. Third-party cables or adapters may affect charging performance and can cause damage
- Use a charging block rated between 20W–25W to ensure optimal charging speed and stability
- Charge the collar in areas with strong Wi-Fi and GPS signals (e.g., near a window or on a high shelf) to support faster firmware updates and better GPS tracking
Charging Too Fast
Charging more quickly than expected can indicate potential hardware or battery health issues.
- The Halo Collar 5 typically takes 1 hour to reach a full charge. If your collar is charging significantly faster than this, it may not be completing a proper charging cycle
- The Halo Collar 4 and older typically take 2 to 2.5 hours to reach a full charge. If your collar is charging significantly faster than this, it may not be completing a proper charging cycle
To ensure safe and accurate charging:
- Use only the original Halo charging cable included with your kit
- Charge with a 20W–25W USB-C power adapter to meet the recommended power specifications
- Avoid using third-party cables or adapters, which may not regulate power correctly and could lead to inaccurate charge cycles
- Charge the collar in an area with strong Wi-Fi and GPS signals to support correct firmware performance
- If charging seems abnormally fast or battery behavior is inconsistent, monitor the collar and contact support if the issue continues
Charging Too Slow
If charging is taking longer than expected, try these tips:
- Check that the Halo cable is properly connected and undamaged
- Use a USB-C power adapter rated at 20W–25W for optimal results
- Test with different power outlets to rule out electrical issues
- Avoid third-party accessories that may supply insufficient or unstable power
- Inspect the charging contacts on the collar for debris or corrosion. Clean gently as needed
Charging Location Impact
Charging in an area with weak Wi-Fi or GPS signals can affect performance.
To optimize:
- Place the collar near a window or elevated shelf while charging
- Weak connectivity can delay firmware updates or cause issues with GPS syncing
- If tracking or updates seem delayed, move the charging location to improve signal strength
Troubleshooting: No Lights or Not Charging
If the collar is not showing lights or doesn’t appear to charge:
Step 1: Check Connections
- Ensure the charging cable is securely connected to both the collar and power source
- Try a different cable, adapter, or outlet
- Test the cable with another device to confirm functionality
Step 2: Inspect Charging Contacts
- Check the collar's charging contacts for dirt, debris, or corrosion
- Clean gently if needed using a soft cloth
Step 3: Power Button Check
- Press the power button for 1 second and observe the battery lights
Step 4: Understand Light Indicators
- Flashing green means the collar is actively charging. This is normal—allow it to continue charging until complete
- Solid green indicates the collar is fully charged. At this point, unplug the collar to help preserve battery health
- Blinking red and green means a firmware update is in progress. Do not unplug the collar during this time to avoid interrupting the update
Step 5: Perform a Hard Reset
- Leave the collar connected to the charger for at least 5 minutes
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds, then release
- If successful, the battery light will begin blinking green, indicating that the collar is actively charging
- Open the Halo App and check the collar’s connectivity status under Settings > My Collars
- If the collar does not respond right away or the LED lights do not turn on, don’t worry—additional help is available. Please reach out to Halo Support for further assistance and next steps
Additional Notes
- If water or debris is suspected in the charging port, rinse with clean water, tap out excess, and allow to fully air dry before attempting to charge
- If the collar doesn’t power on right away, it should begin charging and power on within 30 minutes
- Open the Halo app and navigate to Settings > My Collars > Battery diagnostics to check for battery errors
- If battery module errors are detected, contact support

| Light Pattern | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Flashing Green | Charging | Normal – allow to charge |
| Solid Green | Fully Charged | Unplug to preserve battery |
| Blinking Red & Green | Firmware Updating | Do not unplug |
