How to Create a Halo Fence Follow
Objective
- Create a new Halo Fence to keep your dog(s) contained in a specific area
Environment
- Halo App
- Halo Collar
Background
There are two methods you can use to create a Halo Fence:
Method 1: Hold the collar in your hand and walk to the locations where you want to drop fence posts, using the GPS to place the fence posts in the app.
Method 2: Drop and drag fence posts to the desired location using your finger in the app.
We recommend Method 1 (collar-in-hand) to achieve the highest degree of accuracy.
Procedure
Method 1: Creating a fence with the collar in hand and walking to the specific fence points
(If you are using this method, you will need the collar with you in your hand, holding the collar by the left side with the label - and not on the dog!) This will be the most accurate way to build a fence.
Note: Human motion is different from that of dogs - holding the collar perfectly still in your hand as you walk may lead the collar to believe that there is no motion (and therefore no need to update the location). Therefore, you should try NOT to hold the collar still as you’re walking with it. Move it as you walk to simulate it being on your dog. (EG: A customer holding the collar in the same hand with their phone and trying to hold the phone steady is, by definition, holding the collar steady - that may not work correctly.)
- Click the My Map tab in the bottom left corner of your Halo App.
- Slide the Find & Manage Pets card up so you see Find & Manage Fences.
- Click the circle with the + sign that says "Add Fence"
- Click the circular collar icon on the right side of the map.
- Select the collar that you will use to create the fence.
- Follow the prompt that pops up in the Halo App. Once you are sure you're holding the correct collar, click the Done button in the upper right.
- You should now have a map view of where you are standing with your location shown.
- Use a two-finger pinching motion to zoom in to the specific area that you want to fence - such as a backyard.
-
- Hint: Be sure you are connected to the collar with the app via Bluetooth. You need to look at the app while creating the fence, so you can confirm that the collar is appearing where you would like the fence post to be placed. Fence posts will be placed wherever the collar appears on the app, so be sure that the collar is appearing in the same spot that you are standing in.
- Be sure you are holding the collar on the left side with the label - the right side houses the antenna, so holding it on the right side may interfere with the GPS signal.
-
- Walk to where you would like your first fence post and pause in the location for 10 seconds, then press the Add (GPS) button at the bottom.
-
- Hint: Hold the collar on the left side, held out in front of you, facing forward, with the speaker in an upright position, as if your pet was wearing it. This will create the most accurate fence.
-
- Walk to your next post location and repeat. You should see the fence as a blue line between your two posts.
- Repeat to add additional posts. Be sure to pause at each location briefly. You can add a maximum of 20 posts to your fence.
- You can undo a post you have placed at any time by clicking the Undo button. If you undo a post and want to redo it, simply click the Redo button.
- Once you've placed all of your fence posts, to complete the fence, tap on the first post and you should see the fence complete and the fenced-in should become shaded in blue.
- Tap the Next link in the upper-right corner.
- Enter your Fence Name - you have completed your fence and it is now active!
Note: Please allow at least 15-20 feet (4.6-6.1 meters) of space between the perimeter of your house and your fence. This spacing is to allow enough room for your dog(s) to move around without invoking the fence's Warning Feedback, which will occur when the collar comes within 7-10 feet (2.1-3.0 meters) of the fence. See below for a visualization of what this spacing might look like when you're setting up the fence in your Halo App.
Method 2: Adding a Fence using your finger on the map in the Halo App:
(You can do this while in the comfort of your home, but you should always check the area where you are setting the boundaries to be sure they make sense for you and your dog, visually and physically.) This is not recommended if you want the highest degree of accuracy in your fence.
- Begin by selecting Add Fence as previously described.
- On the next screen, you should see a map of your current location.
- Use a two-finger pinching motion to zoom in to the specific area that you want to fence—such as a backyard.
- Tap the first corner of your fenced area, then continue tapping to mark out the boundaries of your entire fence. You can add a maximum of 20 posts to your fence.
- You can undo a post you have placed at any time by clicking the Undo button. Or, if you undo a post and want to redo it, simply click the Redo button.
- To complete the fence, tap on the first post and you should see the fence complete and the area fenced in should become shaded in blue.
- When you have completed your fence, tap the Next link in the upper-right corner.
- Enter your Fence Name - you have completed your fence and will be active!
To add another fence simply repeat the steps above and give it a new name.
Additional Notes
Please allow at least 15-20 feet (4.6-6.1 meters) of space between the perimeter of your house and your fence.
You cannot create a fence inside of a fence, or any fence that overlaps part of another fence. For more information, look at this article.
