How to Power the Halo Collar on or Off Follow
If you are here because your collar is no longer responsive when plugged into the charger, please see this article.
Objective
- Demonstrate how to turn the Halo Collar on, as well as how to power it down when it requires a wired firmware update or when performing general troubleshooting (power cycle).
Environment
- Halo Collar
Procedure
Make sure to remove the Halo Collar from your dog before turning the Halo Collar on or off. The vibrations that are used to confirm the collar power status can confuse your dog because these same vibrations are used as part of their training. However, you can use a short press on the collar to confirm if it is on while your dog is wearing it.
To power the Halo Collar ON:
Press and briefly hold the Power button for 1-2 seconds—and release. While you are pressing the button, the battery light will rapidly blink GREEN, YELLOW, or RED - indicating the current charge level. If the collar was OFF, then this short press will cause the collar to vibrate once. While the Halo Collar is ON and the collar is moving, the Logo light will blink in that pet's color. The collar is now awake from low-power mode and ready to function normally. See the figure below.
To power the Halo Collar OFF (low-power mode):
Note: This mode is only intended for wired updates and for saving battery when you have no way to charge the Halo Collar. The collar should NOT be used on your dog while in this mode.
Make sure the collar is resting, with the USB port facing up (as in, the collar is upside down). Turning the collar off will only work if it is in this position unless it is plugged into power (see note below). The reason for this is to avoid your dog inadvertently turning the collar off. Once it is in this position, press and hold the power button for about 6 seconds, until you feel three short vibrations. Then, release the button and note that the Logo light flashes red and - after a few seconds - goes out. The collar is now in very low-power mode.
Note: When the collar is plugged into its USB charger, it can be turned off while in any orientation. This is because your dog cannot inadvertently turn the collar off when it is plugged into the charger.
Turning the Halo Collar OFF so you can begin a firmware update via USB: If you need to connect to your collar via USB, first connect your collar to your PC using the provided USB-C cable. Then, turn the collar OFF using the instructions above. Once the collar is OFF, its internal Flash drive becomes accessible on your PC.
When power cycling the collar as a form of troubleshooting, make sure to allow the collar a few minutes to reinitialize once you turn it back on. The collar will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi/Cellular and you should have it outdoors and moving around in order to check its GPS accuracy from the pet card via Bluetooth (for more real-time data).
